Special Educational Needs

AAS admits students who have mild to moderate special educational needs, dependent upon the levels of service required by the individual student and the resources available.  Where necessary, accommodations within the classroom are made; however the curriculum is not modified.

AAS currently has the following staff members dedicated to supporting students who require assistance beyond the framework of the school curriculum:

- One school psychologist;
- Four counselors (two in High School, one in Middle School, and one in Elementary School);
- Four Learning Resource specialists (one in High School, one in Middle School, and two in Elementary School);
- Two teaching assistants;
- One speech and language pathologist;
- One occupational therapy assistant.

AAS also receives visits from a consulting occupational therapist.

In general terms, in order to be eligible for admission, a student must have a good chance for success in a regular classroom setting while receiving up to a maximum of five hours additional support per week.  AAS cannot accommodate students who require a one-on-one aide in the classroom.

For the Principal, in conjunction with the Pupil Support Team, to make an informed decision on admission, it is very important that parents provide us with as much information as possible.  Please forward copies of any previous IEPs, testing results, evaluations by Learning Resource professionals or other relevant documentation to the Admissions department.
